Walking to Herne Hill, Linocut, Liz Bennett

We are looking forward to studio member Liz Bennett's exhibition of linocuts in June. Liz has lived and worked in London all her life, and the prints celebrate familiar South London streets, favourite corners of buildings and museums, and the changing Thames skyline. Liz's most recent work explores the shapes and mysterious presence of the 'dolphins' on the River Thames, the moorings and inlets of the river where boats are held. The prints discover extremes of light and dark through the use of various textured marks and cutting techniques. The Dolphin and Moorings series' include unique hand coloured elements making each print completely different.

We were pleased to show the art documentary films of Michael Palin at our latest Film Night, and it was great to have Michael talking us through the work and his love of art. The evening was hosted by Tristram Powell, who edited the films with Trevor Green to show us key interviews and moments from them. Interspersed between the four films, Michael and Tristram answered questions, and Michael talked very openly about the process of researching and making the films, and how the artists had been chosen for the features. In particular, the films about Hammershoi and Andrew Wyeth led to an interesting discussion about the meaning in the sometimes strange paintings, and how artists use their immediate surroundings and experience to make work.
