There was a good turnout at Slaughterhaus last night for our second Film Night with Tristram Powell. The work of the often overlooked artist and poet David Jones was the theme of the night with an introduction to his work presented by Paul Hills, Emeritus Professor at the Courtauld Institute of Art and co-author of The Art of David Jones - Vision and Memory. Paul selected the work and wrote the catalogue for Jones' 1981 exhibition at the Tate and more recently curated the groundbreaking exhibition at Pallant House, Chichester, so his enlightening and heartfelt presentation was the perfect introduction to Tristram Powell's filmed interview with Jones in his studio in 1965. Powell's film was intense and moving. It felt like being a privileged viewer to a very private conversation and Tristram's talk afterwards added to the sense that the evening had been something very special.
