You will be introduced to the process of black and white Wood Engraving from preliminary drawings and design on the block, different ways of cutting, choosing papers and printing a small limited edition of prints. On the first day you will practice on the first block in preparation for designing, cutting and printing the boxwood block on the second day.

The course will cover health and safety in the workshop, the care and use of wood engraving tools and the use of the Albion printing press.

Tools, blocks, paper and inks will be provided, and Peter will give with advice on the purchase of tools, and how you can continue your wood engraving after the course.

This course provides an excellent introduction to Wood Engraving.

Facilitator: Peter S Smith RE

Peter S Smith is a painter and printmaker with a studio at the St Bride Foundation. He studied Fine Art at Birmingham School of Art and Design, Art Education at Manchester and MA (Printmaking) at Wimbledon School of Art. He is a member of the Society of Wood Engravers and the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers. Examples of his work are held in private and public collections including Tate Britain and the Ashmolean Museum Oxford.

"The way I see it", a book about his printmaking, was published in 2006.
