White Ground and Spit Bite are great ways to make fluid and painterly marks on an etching plate. Working with the different techniques, and understanding how to incorporate them together with layers of aquatint, you will be able to achieve a wide range of tonal watercolour like effects on your etching plates. You will look at and discuss a range of print examples, learn how to prepare the etching plate and how to make and apply White Ground to create washy, painterly marks. In addition, you learn how to use spit bite to paint tonal marks into specific areas of the plate. The last week will be spent perfecting printing the plates. Rob White has a wealth of professional print experience and you will be amazed by how much difference you can make to your image by using a particular ink or wiping in a different ways to gain the most from the delicate tonal marks.
